How-To Create or Edit a host
In this configuration area, you create and define each network object.
Plan the network structure for the monitoring of the hosts in advance to make sure that all dependencies of the hosts are refected in your monitoring environment. A network plan on the basis of the created hosts is displayed in the User Web Interface (see Map).
For creating a new host or editing an existing one, proceed as follows:
- Open the Administration Web Interface > Configuration > Setup > Hosts
- Click an existing entry to change it or click “Create new host” to define a new host
- If required, select a vendor type and click on
- Enter the necessary settings and click on to save and apply the changes.
The following describes the setting for a host in detail:
Setting | Description |
---|---|
Name | Name of the host The name shall not contain special characters or spaces. The name must be unambiguous, shall not be assigned twice and is case sensitive. |
Alias | Alias name of the host. The alias name is used in the web interface of the SONARPLEX appliance. The alias name must be unambiguous, shall not be assigned twice and is case sensitive. If possible, use the same designation as in the "Name" input box. |
Address/Hostname | IP address or name of the host. |

Check for devices that do not react to a ping (e.g. firewalls). "OK" is always simulated as the result of the check. This option only works for WatchGuard firewalls! A standard check for hosts with short response times response time > 3 s => WARNING response time > 5 s => CRITICAL Check for devices that do not react to a ping (e.g. firewalls). "OK" is always simulated as the result of the check. Option for hosts with slow VPN or ISDN connections with longer response times: response time > 5 s => WARNING response time > 8 s => CRITICAL Option for switches with slow VPN or ISDN connections with longer response times: response time > 5 s => WARNING response time > 8 s => CRITICAL Option for quickly accessible switches with short response times: response time > 3 s => WARNING response time > 5 s => CRITICAL |
Contactgroup receiving notifications | Contact group which shall receive a notification in the event of fault message of this host Only the selected contact group or the single contacts of the contacts group (in addition to the admin contact) is allowed to see this hosts in the User Web Interface. |
Normal check frequency (minutes) | Check frequency in minutes. If you want host to be checked on demand, set this value to 0. |
Maximum check attempts | How many times the SONARPLEX appliance shall check the host status. Enter a numerical value in the input box. |
Retry check frequency (minutes) | Frequency in minutes for retry check attempts. For example, enter the value "5" in the field to check the host status 5 times in 60 second intervals. By this you devine a time period of 5 minutes. The recommended value before defining the status of the host as "down" is 3 to 5 checks. |
Notification frequency (minutes) | Time interval for notifications in minutes. If a pending problem is not acknowledged or remedied, after the period entered here has elapsed, another notification is sent to the responsible contact group. |
Notification timeperiod word_to_avoid_word_wrap_bug_confluence | Valid time period to send notifications. |
Send notifications when host is in state | Define what status change triggers a notification. |
Performs checks | Define if the Host check is enabled or not. |
Send notification | Define if the notifications for this host are enabled or not. |
Enable flap-detection | Flap detection activation/deactivation. For more information, please view How-To Detect hosts or services Flap. |
Lower flapping-threshold | Use to specify the low state change threshold used in flap detection for this host. If you set this directive to a value of 0, the program-wide value specified by the low_host_flap_threshold directive will be used. |
Upper flapping-threshold | Use to specify the high state change threshold used in flap detection for this host. If you set this directive to a value of 0, the program-wide value specified by the high_host_flap_threshold directive will be used. |

A Superordinate host from the selection box on which the currently configured host depends. If a superordinate host cannot be accessed, checks if the dependent hosts are discontinued. Network usage is reduced since only logically useful notifications and checks are executed. Thus you only receive a notification on the status of the central device. Another superordinate host from the selection box to define several superordinate hosts. This way you map the interdependencies of the hosts in the monitoring system. These interdependencies can be output as a network plan An individual web address for every host. With this option you can make reference to an online documentation, a collection of problem solutions or a user interface of the corresponding network object (e.g. web interface of a printer or switch). The portal for the azeti agent. (optional) The password for the azeti agent. (optional)
Use this option to bind a service to many hosts with different passwords.
Additional properties. Latitude of the host in decimal format, positve values indicate latitudes north of the equator, negative values southern latitudes. Longitude of the host in decimal format, positve values indicate latitudes east of the meridian, negative values western latitudes. Altitude data of the host. Additional properties. |
